Island Park, Idaho, is a small town in Fremont County. The city was incorporated in 1947 by owners of the many lodges and resorts along US Route 20. They did this to circumvent Idaho’s liquor laws that prohibited the sale of alcohol outside city limits. Island Park has a population of around 200 residents, and at 33 miles long, the city claims to have the longest main street in the world.
Today, Island Park is a popular spot for fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and water sports. It is home to Harriman State Park, which sits within a 16,000-acre wildlife refuge. It offers 22 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding in the summer and 33 miles of trails for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking in the winter. It also provides boat access to two bodies of water: Silver Lake and Golden Lake. Silver Lake has a multi-use trail and is frequented by trumpeter swans.
The Island Park Reservoir was constructed in 1983 as an irrigation storage facility, and now it is a popular destination for fishing in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. It offers some of the best access in the country for avid anglers. If you aren’t into fishing, you can also enjoy boating, water skiing, and swimming. There are also camping facilities nearby if you want to stay for more than one day.
Big Springs is a massive, crystal-clear spring located in Island Park. It produces over 120 million gallons of water a day, making it one of the 40 largest springs in the country. It also forms the headwaters of Henry’s Fork. While you can’t go fishing here, you can take a stroll along the wildlife walking trail to spot moose, bald eagles, ospreys, and waterfowl.
